TrueSum Help

Welcome to TrueSum

How to use TrueSum, from your first business to closing a fiscal year.

TrueSum is bookkeeping software for small businesses, on a Mac or Windows PC. These pages each show how to do one thing, step by step, with pictures of the screen. Most pictures show the sample business, Northlight Studio, so the names and amounts you see are not yours. The sample business is Canadian, so the pictures show Canadian spellings such as Chequing.

Where to start

  • New to TrueSum? Start with Getting started. It goes from the download to your first saved transaction, and shows where the trial, the settings and help are.
  • Doing the everyday work? Go to the section for the job, such as money in and out, customers, vendors, bank accounts, sales tax or reports.
  • Want the whole list? Features lists everything TrueSum does, each line linking to the help for it.
  • Looking for how it works underneath? Advanced explains the books, opening balances, other currencies and closing a year.

The sections

  • Getting started: install TrueSum, create a business, find your way around and record a first transaction.
  • Money in and out: record an expense or money you received, transfer between accounts, split a transaction, find one, change one and undo a change.
  • Customers and sales: add customers, create invoices and estimates, record payments and see who owes you.
  • Vendors and bills: add vendors, enter bills, pay them and see what you owe.
  • Bank accounts: add a bank account or credit card, import a statement, reconcile an account (check it against its bank statement) and export.
  • Sales tax: turn on sales tax, put it on a sale or a purchase, see what you owe and set up rates.
  • Reports: run the Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and the rest, and save them as PDF or CSV.
  • Backups and sync: back up and restore, sync across devices, share a business and use Privacy Mode.
  • Settings: App Settings, Business Settings, the icons on the left and more than one business.
  • Advanced: the chart of accounts, opening balances, other currencies, closing a year, and the What Happened and Diagnostics windows.
